Magdalena Olafsdottir - Screenwriting and Directing

Magdalena will graduate on May 27th from Screenwriting and Directing with her film "Castle in the sky".

The film is about an adventurous child who sets out to find her missing dad and as a result finds herself in an unexpected scenario driven by her own imagination.

-What is the first movie experience you remember?

I used to sneak to watch "Breakfast at Tiffanys" from our neighbors who had it on tape when I was very young. I didn't understand English or anything about the plot of the movie but just watching Audrey Hepburn was a delight. Also always cried so hard when the cat was left in the rain.

-What fascinates you about filmmaking?

I don't feel the need to talk much about feelings in general, so I express them more through writing or visually in the films I've made at school. I also feel that I come closest to understanding other people's experiences and feelings by seeing it on screen. It somehow enlarges the world.

-Why did you choose Screenwriting and Directing?

For me it was a very easy choice, but I chose directing and screenwriting because I write a lot and I also found directing exciting.

-Did anything particularly surprise you in the study?

The study has been diverse and many things I am very happy with and others not. What has surprised me the most is how studying has been the most fun I've ever had, but also the hardest.

-And what does the future look like?

Hopefully I will have the opportunity to record and write my own films in the future. Someday I'm going to try my hand at wildlife documenting, living in Antarctica for a year to film penguins would be the pinnacle.
