Graduation Winter 2022 - Thelma Ósk Bjarnadóttir, Acting

Thelma Ósk Bjarnadóttir is graduating with her film “Freyja”

The film is about Freyja, a former inhabitant of Ísafjörður who moves back home. Since childhood, she has been terribly guilty of not having looked after her little sister Embla well enough when they played at the seashore, with the result that Embla was sucked out into the sea. Or so she is told, she remembers nothing. Embla´s body was never found.

15 years after the trauma, she moves back home and has just joined the investigation department of the police in Ísafjörður when a man's body is found on the shore not far from the town. The man's corpse sets off a series of random events that provide her with possible answers to what happened to her sister.

What is the first movie experience you remember?

The first movie I remember was when the first Harry Potter movie came out on DVD. The magic in the film was absolutely mesmerizing.

What fascinates you about filmmaking?

What fascinates me most about filmmaking is the collaboration. Everyone is working on one idea and bringing it to the big screen. It feels amazing to follow the process from A to Z. Filmmaking offers so much and it's fun to see people flourish in their field. This is something that you pay particular attention to when making film projects and all such artistic processes.

Why did you choose your department?

I have always dreamed of being an actress. I've never dared to take the plunge, but when you get older, you realize how foolish it is to hold back like that. Basically I am a singer and I wanted to add acting to it. It is useful for everything in life.

Did anything particularly surprise you in the study?

Naturally, I knew it would be a challenging course. But I didn't know how much fun it would be and how much you learn about yourself.

And what does the future look like?

I want to keep making movies with talented people, whether it's working behind the screen or being in front of it, it is a foregone conclusion.
