Graduation Spring 2022 - Drómi Ómar Hauksson, Directing and Producing

Drómi Ómar will be graduating from Directing and Producing on June 4th with his film “My little sanctuary”

It takes place in a small town festival of Grundarfjörður where Logi, an autistic boy with low self esteem invites the new café’s waitress to a concert happening the same night. Throughout the film he’s deciding whether it’s better to be himself or act what society wants him to be.

"As an autistic director, this short film is my personal dedication to spread awareness about autism. The message of the film is that autism isn’t what you see and something you shouldn’t be embarrassed about" -Drómi Ómar

What is your first memory related to films?

It was either The Lion King or Wall-E as a child. Those films moved me so much and I must have watched them a hundred times a month on our VHS

What fascinates you about film making?

I think it is the opportunity to tell a story you are passionate about that could move people, even change lives. I find that amazing. To be able to work with such talented people with the same passion is nothing but love and anticipation in getting projects going.

Why did you choose Directing and Producing?

I am quite the “doer” and want things to move forward. I have always been a story teller at heart since I can remember. I put that in all kinds of forms, be it videos, computer games or music. Although I did start to find myself in screenwriting/storytelling in the later semesters. I always rather envision myself as a director. But I believe I will want to produce in a creative way projects that other directors might be able to communicate.

Anything that surprised you?

How important it is to do projects that are true to themselves. Be honest and tell stories that expose you. You can not tell someone else's story as well as those who lived it. That is a motto I am going to try to take with me into the future

And what does the future look like?

I want to take this short film as far as possible. Festivals and such - I want to continue writing projects and get them known. My sights are on the TV/Drama industry. I also have a voice in making computer games that film making can be intertwined into, new and powerful ways of telling stories and creating more opportunities
