Graduation Spring 2022 - Daníel Guðjón Andrason, Screenwriting and Directing

Daníel Guðjón will be graduating on June 4th from Screenwriting and Directing with his film "Regression"

The film is about Isaac, a young and unknown writer, who visits his father, a famous writer, to bring him a copy of his new novel. But the time spent together and their conversations move Isaac away from his intention, and instead reopen old wounds and unresolved problems

What is your first memory related to films?

At Álftanes there was a small video rental that I was used to going to and picking up films on Fridays. One of the first movies I saw was "The Matrix", which I, at eight years old, watched with my dad. I will readily admit that I had no idea what was going on in the movie - who this white rabbit was and what this "Matrix" was. But despite the little understanding of the story, it did not matter, because the film was both entertaining and different from anything else I had seen before. Today, I consider "The Matrix" to be the film that gave me the most inspiration to start studying filmmaking

What fascinates you about film making?

What fascinates me most about filmmaking today is the unpredictability of filmmaking. What you have planned and scheduled in advance (pre-production) can often go somewhat out the window or take unexpected directions, and what is left is some cocktail of what was planned and random moments

Why did you choose Screenwriting and Directing?

Screenwriting, this first step in filmmaking, is for me the most fun part of the process. To write stories that are personal, that come from oneself, and to create human characters. This is what fascinates me the most and pushed me towards the script department

And what does the future look like?

You leave school excited and enforced, that much is clear.

My knowledge of screenwriting is many times greater than when I started, and you can only continue to allow good ideas and stories to come to you, catch them from the sea of your mind and keep writing
