Halldor Oli Gunnarsson

Halldor Oli Gunnarsson is graduating from Screenwriting and Directing with his film “UFO”

"A peculiar series of events begins when a mysterious creature enters an óut of the way restaurant just outside the capital."

We used this opportunity to learn a bit about Halldor Oli, who will be graduating on the 12th of June

-What drew you to filmmaking ?

“I have always had a passion for films. Then, sometime during my teen years I became fascinated by filmmaking and the art of making cinema. But besides a few school films here and there, I did not do anything further - just finished my university degrees and entered the workforce. But finally, I listened to my heart and enrolled in The Icelandic Film School.”

-Why did you choose Screenwriting and Directing?

“I wanted to learn how to write scripts. I truly enjoy writing stories and have done for many years - but I was lacking the right tools and knowledge to write scripts. The directing part was a bonus and an enjoyable challenge.”

-Were there any surprises during your studies?

“Very many. I think I surprised myself the most, in a good way. Another thing that surprised me was how many teachers at the school are active within the film industry - not some laymen spouting examples from textbooks; these are professionals that speak from experience and incredible knowledge.”

-Any particular memories you will be taking with you?

“I think it would be all the group assignments. I especially remember the first assignment we had in our 1st semester, this was our first practical exercise with all the equipment. I was in a group with some other guys, and I just remember what fun it was. We knew so little, but I remember thinking "wow man, this is something I want to do more of". Another group project that I will not forget was in the 2nd semester. It was filmed at the old military base near Keflavík, probably about 10-12 hours of outdoor shooting and it was colder than hell. Then I first found out what incredible fun you can have on set despite the harsh conditions, and how quickly one can form a good relationship on a set - especially in such extreme situations. It's fun to make movies!”.

-And finally, what are your plans for the future?

“To work on and develop my scripts. To apply for grants from IFC. To get my film into festivals. To continue making movies. Enjoy life. Travel. Love. Conquer the world.”
