The Icelandic Film School has four different departments. Take a good look at what each department has to offer before you decide which path of instruction is best for you.

Department 1: Directing and Producing
The main focus of this department is on instructing students in the techniques of directing and producing narrative films. Students also receive training in the making of commercials, music videos, documentaries, TV and news productions. Each student will produce and direct at least three short films by the end of their studies as well as work on a variety of other individual and group projects. The departments instructors are all award-winning directors and producers who are active industry professionals.

The Directing and Producing Department is well suited for dynamic, talented individuals who wish to specialize as directors and producers and acquire a broad foundation in all aspects of film and TV production.

Department 2: Technical
This department is responsible for the education of our next generation of cinematographers, editors, sound designers and set designers. Cinematography, editing and sound design are each given equal weight throughout the four semesters of instruction, but students can specialize further in a particular discipline through the various film projects in which they participate. The course is a combination of theoretical studies and various practical exercises. Each student in the department is also required to turn in two shorts of which they are the author.

The Technical Department is well suited to individuals who love to use technology and the tools of filmmaking in a creative way.

Department 3: Screenwriting and Directing
This department is for those who wish to both write and direct their own screenplays. The course of instruction is very demanding; each student works on numerous screenplays simultaneously, as well as directing a final project each semester. Students are introduced to and taught to write screenplays for all genres of film, from simple industrial shorts to full-length features.

The Screenwriting and Directing Department is open to creative individuals who have a strong ability to express their ideas in written form.

Department 4: Acting

This department is for those who wish to become screen actors or actresses. The program is centered around training in traditional acting techniques and methods, and focus is given to body language, voice, style, interpretation, dancing and singing. In addition, students are instructed in the fundamentals of film production. Each student performs in numerous projects and also makes two shorts in which they play the lead.

The Acting Department is best suited for those who have a manifest talent for acting, which applicants are encouraged to demonstrate during their admission interviews.
